About Me

Balamban, Cebu, Philippines
It was written in the unfinished diary of the late Dr. Jose Rizal that a man of strength and wisdom from a royal lineage in Visayas would rise in the future to liberate the Philippines from the bondage of poverty and foreign domination. His name would be known as... Bernardo Carpio!

CABASIANGAN

Cabasiangan is a mountain barangay that is located northwest of Balamban. It has a total land area of 2,600 hectares. It is bounded by Sunog, Matun-og, Luca, Ginatilan, Danao City, Compostela, & Cebu City.

It is politically subdivided into eleven (11) sitios, namely: Asiotes, Sangkil, Matag, Mahabog, Liputon, Pamantakan, Malingin, Udlom, Lagdum, Buton, and Mangga.

Cabasiangan was named after an elephant ear plant, Alocasia esculenta. Cabasiangan is a Hispanized spelling of a Visayan collective word “kabasyangan” or “kabadyangan” which literally means “a place abundant with basyang (badyang)”. “Badyang” or “basyang” is a local term for elephant ear plant, Alocasia esculenta

Although the elephant ear plant is very similar to the taro, Colocasia esculenta, which is known locally as “gabi”, it cannot be eaten like the latter. All parts of both the taro and the elephant ear plant may cause mild stomach upset if ingested without cooking, and contact with the sap may irritate the skin. The roots of some species of the elephant ear plant are edible but most contain poisonous crystals which cause numbing and swelling of the tongue and throat that can cause itching, swelling, and difficulty swallowing. This is because of the fact that almost all genus and species of the family Aracea contain calcium oxylate crystals.

Cabasiangan is an agricultural barangay most especially focused on root crops & vegetables.1
